Skiing in Bansko with Kids: The Family Ski Holiday Guide

Is Bansko good for a family ski holiday? In our experience, yes — and for reasons that matter when you travel with children. The resort is compact, the beginner areas are gentle, prices are a fraction of the Alps, and children under 7 ride the lifts for a symbolic fee. We have been teaching kids and fitting them with gear next to the gondola since 2000, so this guide is the advice we give parents at the counter every winter: what to book, what it costs and how a family day actually looks.

Why families pick Bansko

Value. A skiing family spends on three things: lift passes, gear and lessons. In Bansko all three cost noticeably less than in most of Western Europe, and children pay less again. For the 2025/26 season a 6-day adult lift pass was €341, while a 6-day child pass (ages 7–11.99) was €164. Kids under 7 skied for a symbolic €0.60 per day. The 2026/27 lift prices have not been published yet — the resort operator usually announces them in mid-December on banskoski.com — so treat these figures as a reference.

A compact resort. One gondola takes you from town up to Banderishka Polyana in about 25–30 minutes. Our main shop is at Pirin Str. 92A, right next to the gondola base station and its parking, so rental, lessons and the lift are within a few steps of each other. With children, less walking in ski boots matters.

Gentle beginner areas. The nursery slopes at Banderishka Polyana and Chalin Valog are where our kids' groups spend their first days. The wider area has around 75 km of marked pistes between 990 and 2,600 m, so parents get plenty of skiing while the children learn, and the roughly 16 km Ski road brings the whole family back to town at the end of the day.

A real town at the bottom. The old town has mehanas (traditional taverns) with Bulgarian food that children usually love, plenty of spa hotels, and the Razlog and Banya hot springs are just 5–10 km away. Read more in our Bansko guide.

Kids' ski lessons at Ski Mania

We are a licensed member of the Bulgarian Ski School and teach both skiing and snowboarding to all ages and levels. Here is how it works for children.

Group lessons: small classes, 2 or 4 hours

• Group size: maximum 8 children per instructor, so nobody stands at the back waiting for a turn.
• Duration: 2 hours or 4 hours per day. For younger children we normally recommend 2 hours — they learn fast but tire fast, and a happy child at the end of the lesson comes back keen the next morning. Older kids and teenagers with some experience usually get more out of 4 hours.
• Prices: group 2h from about €42 per day in low season and about €47 in high season; group 4h from about €78 / €88. High season for school pricing runs 23 Dec 2026 – 20 Mar 2027.
• Meeting point: our shop by the gondola. You collect the lesson voucher at the shop the day before, so the first morning has no paperwork.

Private lessons

If your child is very young, nervous, or you want fast progress in a few days, a private lesson is the better tool. One-to-one 2h starts from about €89 per day (about €102 in high season). A private lesson for up to two people — two siblings, or a parent and child — starts from about €118 / €139, plus €40–60 per extra person per day. Many families combine both: a private lesson on day one to settle in, then group lessons for the rest of the week.

Our instructors teach in English, Bulgarian, Russian and other languages. Tell us your child's language when you book and we will match the group accordingly.

What parents do meanwhile

The lesson block is your skiing time: 2 hours fits around your own morning on the pistes, 4 hours gives you a proper half day. Children's rental: free helmets and what to get

Children's rental at Ski Mania is simpler and cheaper than adult rental, and the helmet is free. Prices in EUR for the 2026/27 season:

What we recommend for a child's first ski week:

• The full ski set (skis, boots, poles) — we fit the boots first and pick the ski length to match. Bring the socks your child will actually ski in.
• A helmet — always, and it costs you nothing.
• Warm outer layers. If you don't own ski clothing, jacket + pants sets rent from €18 per day; ask us about sizes when you book.
• Storage. Leave the gear with us overnight for free instead of carrying skis back to the hotel.

A family day on the mountain, hour by hour

A typical mid-week day for a family with a child in a morning group lesson:

• The evening before (after ~15:30): stop by the shop, get fitted, collect the lesson voucher and leave everything with us overnight.
• 08:00: the shop opens. Pick up boots and skis.
• 08:30: the gondola starts running. The first half hour is the busiest; arriving a little earlier or later shortens the wait.
• ~09:00: you are at Banderishka Polyana after the 25–30 minute ride. Children meet their instructor at the time on the voucher; parents head for the lifts.
• Mid-morning: kids on the nursery slope, parents skiing. Meet at the end of the lesson for a hot chocolate.
• Lunch and a long break: children in ski boots need more downtime than adults expect. A warm indoor hour after lunch resets everyone's mood.
• Afternoon: ski together on the easy pistes — this is where children show off what they learned. Lifts close between 16:00 and 16:15, so start heading down by 15:30.
• Down to town: by gondola (runs until 17:00), or — for confident family members — on skis along the Ski road.
• Evening: drop the gear at the shop, then dinner in an old-town mehana.

Practical tips for parents

• Get fitted the day before. This single habit saves the most stressful 30 minutes of the week.
• Time the gondola. Avoid the first rush at 08:30 if your lesson is later; the queue thins out quickly.
• Dress in layers. A base layer, a fleece and a waterproof shell beat one thick jacket — kids overheat on the nursery slope and freeze on the lift.
• Sunscreen and lip balm. At 2,000 m the sun is strong even in January, especially reflected off snow.
• Snacks and breaks. A chocolate bar in a pocket fixes most mid-lesson meltdowns; plan one long warm-up break per day and don't try to ski until the last lift with small children.
• Have a plan for tired legs. Snowshoes rent from €10 per day for a gentle forest walk, a gondola round trip (2025/26: adult €27, child €19) suits non-skiing family members who want to see the top, and the Banya and Razlog hot springs are 5–10 km away for a rest-day soak.
• Book online. Lessons and rental booked on our website come with a 10% online discount; you pay a deposit and we confirm availability by email.

Family budget example: 2 adults + 1 child, 6 days

A realistic starting point for a family with one child aged 7–11 who takes daily group lessons while the parents ski on their own. Ski Mania prices are 2026/27 rates; lift passes are 2025/26 reference prices, because 2026/27 lift prices have not been published yet.

The 10% online discount applies to the Ski Mania part of the bill (rental and lessons). If your child is under 7, the lift pass line changes dramatically: 6 days at the symbolic €0.60 comes to €3.60 instead of €164.
