Should you rent ski gear in Bansko or fly with your own? For most holiday skiers the answer is short: rent. A full adult ski set (skis, boots and poles) costs €94 for 6 days at Ski Mania – under €16 a day – and you pick it up a few steps from the gondola base station. Bringing your own means paying an airline sports-equipment fee for every ski bag on every flight leg, dragging a two-metre bag through two airports and a transfer, and hoping the edges arrive straight. For many travellers the return-flight baggage fees alone come to as much as, or more than, a week's rental in Bansko – before you count servicing, wax and the lost time.

Let's take a typical booking: two adults and one child, skiing six days.

Renting at Ski Mania

Book online and the 10% discount takes that to roughly €281 for the whole family for the whole week. Nothing to carry to the airport, nothing to service afterwards.

Bringing your own

The costs here are harder to see because they are spread out, but they are real:

• Airline fees. Sports equipment is normally charged per bag, per flight – so a return trip means two fees for every ski bag. For a family with three bags that is six separate charges, and on most carriers the total lands in the same range as the rental bill above, or higher.
• Servicing. Skis need an edge grind, base repair and a hot wax at least once a season, plus a binding safety check. For three sets that is a real annual bill before you even travel.
• Transfer. Three ski bags plus suitcases rarely fit in a standard car; you may need a larger transfer vehicle from Sofia or Thessaloniki.
• Time. Oversized-baggage desks at check-in, waiting at the odd-size belt on arrival, and the same again on the way home.
• Risk. A bent edge or a cracked boot shell in transit, with no fallback on day one.
• Children. Kids outgrow boots and skis almost every season. Buying kit for a child who skis one week a year rarely pays back.

For a family on one ski week a year, renting is cheaper on the day and far cheaper over the years. Our guests also tell us it is simply a more relaxed way to start a holiday.

What's included and how fitting works

Renting from us is not a queue at a counter. This is how it works:

• 500+ complete sets. Skis, snowboards, boots, poles, helmets, jackets and pants, snowshoes, touring and cross-country sets – a full range of lengths and sizes for every level.
• Boots fitted by our staff. Boots are the part most people get wrong. We measure, you try, we adjust – and you leave with a pair that fits.
• Skis set up for you. We match the skis to your height, weight and level and adjust the bindings before you leave the shop.
• Pick up the day before. Come in after 15:30 on the day before your first ski day. Next morning you go straight to the gondola at 08:30 instead of standing in a shop.
• Free overnight storage. Leave your skis and boots with us every evening – no carrying gear to your hotel and back. Our main shop is at Pirin Str. 92A, next to the gondola base station and its parking.
• Swap if something isn't right. If the boots pinch or you want a different ski after the first run, come by and we change it.
• Open 08:00–18:00 daily in season, in both shops (Pirin Str. 92A and Pirin Str. 113).

If you are combining rental with lessons at our ski and snowboard school, you collect both your gear and your lesson voucher at the shop the day before, and you meet your instructor at the shop by the gondola.

When bringing your own gear makes sense

We rent skis for a living, but we will happily tell you when your own kit is the better choice:

• You have custom-fitted boots. Heat-moulded liners and custom footbeds are personal; no rental boot will feel the same. Bring your boots and rent only skis and poles – €76 for 6 days – and you avoid flying the heaviest, most awkward item while keeping the fit you know.
• You ski many weeks a season. If your skis are out for weeks rather than days each winter, the purchase and servicing spread thin and owning starts to pay.
• You ride something specific. Powder skis, race skis or a board you are attached to – renting an equivalent is not always possible.
• You are driving to Bansko. Coming by car from Sofia (about 2.5 hours) or Thessaloniki (about 3 hours), there are no airline fees, so the calculation shifts. You still need to service the gear, and the free overnight storage at our shop is open to you too if you rent part of your kit.

Even in these cases, the "own boots, rented skis" combination is the option most of our returning guests settle on.

Premium and touring gear

If you are past the intermediate stage, our premium sets give you current-model skis and boards with more edge grip and stability at speed: a premium ski set is €140 for 6 days, a premium snowboard set €176. Compared with flying your own high-end pair, that is a small price for skis prepared before every hand-over.

For those who want to leave the pistes, we also rent ski-touring sets (€176 for 6 days), cross-country and telemark sets (€140 for 6 days) and snowshoes (€60 for 6 days). Bansko sits on the edge of Pirin National Park, and a day on skins or snowshoes is a very different way to see the mountain.
